Jun. 93 Butterfly Count:  Participation invited in the North American 
Butterfly Association's nationwide butterfly count in June.  This

May. 93 Goodloe Memorial:  A bench will be installed in May by the 
City of Webster Groves in the Frederick S. Plant Bird 
Sanctuary at Jefferson and Swon as a memorial to Frances
Goodloe.
Oct. 93 Liddell, Vivian My Mentor, Edgar Denison:  Denison died Aug. 14.  His
drawing for the cover of Nature Notes, submitted in 1980, graces
the cover of this issue.
Oct. 93 Club News:  Mary Wiese, a life member, was seriously hurt when
she was struck by a vehicle.
Oct. 93 Tragic Crash:  Five scientists killed in crash in Ecuador.  Two had
ties to St. Louis.  Alwyn Agentry was on the staff of the 
Missouri Botanical Garden.  Ted Parker of Louisiana State 
University was known to local birders as an enthusiastic 
birder in Tower Grove Park.
Dec. 93 Mary Wiese died on November 10.

Apr. 93 Backpacker Alert--Don't Reuse Those Film Canisters--they may
contain harmful chemicals.  Use only canisters approved for
contact with food.
May. 93 Balsiger, Yvonne Happy Birthday to us!  WGNSS was formally organized in 1920
with   85 adult members and 30 children.  In 1929 a bulletin was
printed with announcements of activities.  In February 1930 the
bulletin was given the name Nature Notes.  495 copies of our
bulletin were mailed this month.

Apr. 93 ch-ch-ch-changes!  Valgard Jonsson is leaving his post as Editor.
Anne McCormack will be the new Editor, starting with the May
issue of Nature Notes.  Jonsson's tenure as Editor began with
the April 1986 issue and ends with the April 1993 issue.
Apr. 93 Executive Board Proposes several changes in the WGNSS Constitution and 
By-Laws:
  An additional membership grade, student member, is created.
  The Editor is added to the Executive Board, which shall consist
    of the officers and the three members at large.
  Members-at-Large and the Editor are appointed by the Executive
    Board
  Members-at-Large may serve only one two-year term.
These changes were proposed at the March general meeting, to
be voted on at the April general meeting.

Why has participation in general meetings declined so severely?
At one time we filled the largest room at the County Library
Headquarters, and now we use the smallest room and have 
15-20 people attending, even with prominent local or national
speakers.  Embarrassing!

speak at WGNSS's March general meeting; see below.
May. 93 Balsiger, Yvonne Scudder Scholarship:  Delbert Hutchison, a PhD candidate at 
Washington University, is the 1993 recipient of the Scudder 
Scholarship.  He will conduct field studies of the collared lizards
in Ozark glades.
Jun. 03 Richardson, Marjorie Reports receipt of thank you letters from two Scudder 
recipients:  one from Niels Rattenborg, 1992 recipient, and one 
from Delbert Hutchison, our 1993 recipient.
Oct. 03 Wells, C. Robert Niels Rattenborg, 1992 recipient of the Scudder Scholarship, will 
speak at the WGNSS general meeting on Nov. 5.   See below.

will speak on "Mushrooms:  apprehension and awareness"
Feb. 93 Dr. Richard Coles, Director of Washington University's Tyson
Research Center, will speak on "Where have all the songbirds
gone?"
Mar. 93 Marshal Hedin, a graduate student in the Washington 
University Biology Dept., will speak on "Missouri Spiders and
their allies:  A Caney Mountain Study".  (Marshal was the 1992 
recipient of WGNSS's Scudder Scholarship.)
Apr. 93 Owen Sexton of Washington University's Biology Dept. faculty
will speak on "Hibernation in Reptiles:  From Missouri to the
world."
Sep. 93 Wells, Bob Myrmecologist to Address September WGNSS Meeting:
Dr. James Trager, naturalist, will present a lecture about the 
Shaw Arboretum's wetlands restoration project.
Oct. 93 Wells, C. Robert Kah Gross, field science director, will present a lecture on the
Tyson Research Center's Field Science Program
Nov. 93 Wells, C. Robert Meeting Features Double Bill:  Niels Raattenborg, 1992 recipient
of the Scudder Scholarship, will report on his research on 
simulation of brown-headed cowbird parasitism in reducing
the hatching of house sparrows.  Ellen McCallie will speak on 
"Research and Living Things in the Flooded Forests of the 
Amazon."
Dec. 93 Wells, Bob Natural Historian to Speak at Joint Meeting:  Paul Nelson, 
Chief of the Natural History Program, DNR, will present a slide 
lecture on ecosystem restoration at a joint meeting of WGNSS &
St. Louis Audubon at Powder Valley on January 6, 1994
