CONSERVATION
Jan. 70 Giant Steps Away from DDT:  On Nov. 30 the Secretary of
Agriculture banned the use of DDT for  control of shade tree 
pests, pests in aquatic areas, house & garden pests, and
tobacco pests.  This will curtail about 35% of the current DDT
usage in the U.S.  DDT use for all other purposes is to be stopped
by Dec. 31, 1970
Apr. 70 The Conservation Federation of Missouri will hold its Annual
Meeting on April 17-19 at the Ramada Inn in Columbia.
Apr. 70 Slusser, Mrs. Dorothy The Coalition for the Environment Teach-In is scheduled for
April 22.  This is an effort to call attention to the current 
environmental crisis in all areas:  water, air, noise pollution, etc.
Apr. 70 A Project for Missouri?  In Colorado the makers of Coors beer
have announced they'll pay 10 cents per pound for old aluminum
cans.
May. 70 Dwyer, Robert Teach-In on the Environment:  Excellent introduction to the 
objectives of the Teach-In and essay on environmental problems.
May. 70 Denison, Edgar Bounties - A Disgusting Chapter in Missouri:  $128,000 paid in
1968 for killing 12,107 coyotes and 146 bobcats, the highest
bounty payments in the Union.  Missouri is one of only 20 states
that still pays bounties.  What the reader can do to stop the
practice.
Jun. 70 Massie, Joel The  Nature Conservancy has an offer from a benefactor to donate
one half of what is owed for the Pleasant Valley Cave Natural
Area in Jefferson County if the Nature Conservancy can raise the 
other half within 90 days.  Donations are urgently needed to 
take advantage of this generous offer.
Jun. 70 Pickering, Burrell Conservation Highlights:  At long last the conservation moment is
gaining momentum.
Jun. 70 The 1970 edition of the Conservation Directory lists more than 1,100
organizations concerned with the environment.  For the first time
the Directory includes groups putting their muscle into population
conrol efforts on behalf of saving the environment.

Oct. 70 On Sept. 11 the Coalition for the Environment began a campaign
demanding returnable bottles instead of non-returnables.    
Support asked from citizens.
Nov. 70 Developed recreation, from mountain-top highways, ski centers,
fire and snowmobile trails, fire towers, motorboats on lakes, 
lake shore homes, airplanes overhead, tourist traps and topless 
dancers, lumbering operations, are viewed as "wilderness" 
(in the Adirondacks).
Dec. 70 The Special Issue of the Missouri Conservationist (June 1970)
suggests that the forest programs should stress total ecologic,
recreational and educational values and not principally hunting 
and fishing.
Dec. 70 Can the Archery Be Saved?  Plans are being completed for a new
90 acre lake at Busch Wildlife that will destroy a scenically
beautiful area known to botanists and birders as the Archery.

WGNSS started with ornithology but soon added botany and
entomology, followed by astronomy, geology, ichthyology, and
herpetology.  Field trips started early and some were home before
their families were out of bed.

Mammoth Creek meets the Big River.  Describes the flora and
fauna of the area and her experiences in the vicinity of this cabin, 
named the ROCKPILE.  (Many "Reports from the Rockpile" by
