Jun. 48 Petersen, Oscar (Visit to Pickel Springs) - Article in Oscar's own handwriting, 
and accompanied by several pages of good photocopies of 
people, unfortunately not identified.  His name appears as 
"Petersen" in his own handwriting.  It's often shown as Peterson
elsewhere in Nature Notes.  
Jy-Aug 58 Editor The June 15 Botany breakfast turned into brunch because cooking
was delayed by rain.  After breakfast the group inspected the 
Roundhouse, the Greensfelder's former summer home.  It now
belongs to the Conservation Commission and is to be WGNSS
headquarters.  A detailed description of the home given.  It's round.

CONSERVATION
Jan. 58 Conservation Dynamics  - This will be a new course offered by
Washington University on Thusdays, 8-9:45 PM, beginning Feb. 13.
WGNSS member Bruce Dowling will the the instructor of the 
course, which will try to create a conservation mindedness.
May. 58 It was suggested at the April 19th banquet that WGNSS ask 
MDC to renew the Conservation Trails at Busch Wildlife.  Since
Bruce Dowling left they have been allowed to run down.

Feb. 58 Comfort, J. Earl A 1957 Bird Review - In the St. Louis Area 1957 gave us 275
Feb. 58 species.  List attached.
Feb. 58 Comfort, James F. Weldon Springs Christmas Census - Over 35 adults plus a goodly
sprinkling of small fry participated.   71 species (same as last 
year) and 10,338 individuals (14,601 last year).  Detail given
Feb. 58    Jim Comfort captured and banded an indigo bunting at the Busch
Area on Jan. 10.  This is the second winter record for this bird.

Jan. 58 Comfort, James F. Clinton N. Day - Clinton Day, a member of WGNSS since the fall
of 1940, died on Dec. 2, 1957.  (An extensive memorial.)
Jan. 58 Members were happy to welcome Mr. Sam Alfend, now of
Cincinnati, Ohio, on the Christmas Bird Census.
Jan. 58 Julian Neill reports hearing from Allen Ziegler, now in Berkeley, 
California, where he is studying for his Doctors Degree.
Feb. 58 News from the Bennetts, Grand Canyon, Arizona (Letter to  Earl
Comfort)
Feb. 58 We wish a happy retirement to George and Polly Moore, who 
retired Jan. 1st.  He has been with the Conservation Commission
since 1943 and at Rockwoods Reservation since 1948.  Before 
1943 he and Polly were the naturalists at Meramec State Park.
George is Editor of the Bluebird, an office he has held for many 
years.
Feb. 58 We congratulate Miss Elizabeth Golterman who is one of the ten
St. Louis women honored at a tea on Jan. 21 for her outstanding
service to the community.  Miss Golterman presented the film
"Gray Gull, the Hunter", at  one of our meetings last year.
Mar. 58 Happy Birthday to Mr. Oscar Peterson, the Vagabond Dreamer, on
his 93rd birthday, March 10, 1958.
Mar. 58 One of our members, Mr. Harry Houston, Sr., died suddenly on
Feb. 12.  We express our sympathy to Mrs. Houston.
Apr. 58 Comments made by the Vagabond at his birthday party at the 
Palms on March 15 - Look carefully, this starts with no heading on 
p. 4 of this issue. The remarks are followed by three poems written
by the Vagabond.  
Apr. 58 Congratulations to Rex Conyers upon his receipt of the St. Louis
Audubon Society's Conservation Award on Friday, March 21.
May. 58 Arthur Bennett, a WGNSS member now working at the Grand
Canyon National Park, invites members visiting the park this 
summer to stop by and he'll show you some good birding spots.
May. 58 Karen Kratoville, Larry Schainker, and Larry Licht were among the
recipients of special awards at the St. Louis Audubon Society's 
Screen Tour, Thursday, April 10th.

In going over old records, it has been found that WGNSS was 
celebrating its 38th anniversary instead of 30th as previously
reported.  However we still have good reason to celebrate.
May. 58 President Dick Wason announced at the banquet on April 19 that
WGNSS has been accepted by the Missouri Conservation 
Commission as the group to receive the use of the Greensfelder
cabin at Rockwoods Reservation.  It seems WGNSS will have an
outdoor home.

will be an informal dinner party in honor of Mr. Oscar Petersen, who

Apr. 58 Report on the General Meeting at the Palms on March 15.  After
the dinner honoring Oscar Petersen, Dr. John Wanamaker, 
Professor of Biology at Principia College at Elsah, Illinois, took the
guests on a trip to Africa.
Apr. 58 Monthly Bird Census at the Busch Wildlife Area, Weldon Springs,
Mo., Sunday, April 13.  Meet at the main gate at 8 AM.
Apr. 58 Anniversary Banquet at the Lodge of the Busch Wildlife Area, 
Weldon Springs, Mo.  6 PM, Saturday, April 19, Turkey dinner, 
$1.75 for adults and $1 for children.  Will be preceded by field 
trips at 9 AM and 1:30 PM.  Program being planned.
May. 58 Report on 38th Anniversary celebration at Busch Wildlife.  The field
trips were held despite occasional rain.  The food cooked and 
served by the ladies of the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Weldon
Springs was excellent.  Menu given. 80 adults and 14 children 
attended the banquet.  After dinner Francel Pickel gave a history
of the organization, following which Mr. Charles Schwartz of the 
MDC showed his film "The Way of Life".  Mr. Charles Barbee spoke.
Stuart, May and Jeanne O'Byrne provided an astronomical center-
piece.  Other members also provided displays.  
May. 58 WGNSS General Meeting, 8 PM, Friday, May 9, at the Webster
Groves Library.  Election of officers. Dr. Harold Bulger will speak 
on "Mapping of the American West".

enjoyed a good supper and get together.  Elbert Fanter, Chmn. Of
the Buildings and Gound Committee gave a report on the 
Committee's activities.  The Rules for the use of the Roundhouse

Nov. 58 WGNSS General Meeting, 2 PM, Sunday, Nov. 23, at the 
Roundhouse--Afternoon meeting, Bird Walk, Botany Walk, Wood 
Cutting, and a short Business meeting at 4 PM.  Wood cutters 
meet at the Roundhouse at 10 AM.  Bring tools.  House cleaning
spree for the ladies.  Vegetable stew and coffee served. 
Nov. 58 Vogt, Charlotte Report on the October general meeting at the Roundhouse.

planning for a Christmas party lead by President Jones and then 
turned over to a panel of Wason, Grossenheider and Conyers 
concerning use of the Roundhouse for Nature Study.
