League will be held in St. Louis on Sept. 5-7, with headquarters
at the Institute of Technology, St. Louis University, 3621 Olive St.
WGNSS members are invited attend any of the functions of the
convention.

BOTANY
Oct. 52 Botany Group Breakfast, 8 AM, Sunday, Oct. 5, Rockwoods
Reservation, Glencoe.  Meet at the Museum and bring breakfast to
cook.
CONSERVATION
Nov. 52 Comfort, James F. Felling the Big Oaks - Scathing report on observations by WGNSS
members during their visit to the Big Oak Tree State Park.  Three
giants were found lying on the ground, one which was cut to make
a dugout canoe for the Park Superintendent's son;.  Other examples
of park mismanagement were cited, included timber selling at
Big Springs and "the Copper Hollow fiasco" at Meramec State 
Park.  This article was a reprint of a letter to the Editor of the Post-
Dispatch.
ENTOMOLOGY
Jan. 52 Comfort, James F. A Monarch butterfly found on Dec. 2 at Weldon Springs, was a 
good last date.

ORNITHOLOGY
Jan. 52 Comfort, James F. The sleet of early December has brought many birds to home 
feeders.  There's a remarkable difference in the winter popuation
at Weldon Springs this year as compared to last.  This year, in
comparison to last year, there's a bumper crop of acorns and 
juniper berries.  Two remarkable birds seen recently were a 
summer tanager and a full plumaged Baltimore oriole, both at 
Weldon Springs.

May. 52 A farmer found with several blackbirds in his possession
by a Conservation agent was fined  $10 and cost by a Magistrate's
Court in Jennings, on a plea of guilty.
May. 52 Ninety-six color photographs of American Birds will be featured in
the April issue of Woman's Day, the A&P Magazine.  The photo-
graphs were taken by Helen Cruickshank, wife of Allan D. 
Cruickshank, bird photographer of the National Audubon Society.

PEOPLE
Jan. 52 Comfort, James F. Mr. & Mrs. George Moore are spending Jan. and Feb. in Florida.
Mr. Moore was chosen as the recipient of the St. Louis Audubon
Society's "Conservationist of the Year" Award because of his fine
work at Rockwoods and in the local schools in bringing the story of
Conservation to many city dwellers who have little contact with
nature in the field.
Mar. 52 Mr. & Mrs. Fred Pfeiffer and their daughter, Sunny Lee, have
moved to St. Petersburg, Florida.
May. 52 Editor May (Mrs. S. L.) O'Byrne was recipient of a Scholarship
Award by the St. Louis Audubon Society for having been a long
hard worker for nature appreciation in the younger set, especially
the Scouts.
May.52 WGNSS members Joe Castelli, Jim Jackson, Jim Comfort, and 
Dennis Connor served as Nature Directors/Leaders at the May
Boy Scout Camporee.  
May. 52 Those who missed the Science Fair can see some of the better
exhibits on May 16 at the University City High School.  Rex
Conyers will have the many fine exhibits of his group, including
one that won a $6,000 scholarship for its exhibit.  An exhibit
featuring the Blue Bird Trail at Weldon will also be there.  
Aug. 52 Comfort, James F. A Field Guide to the Mammals, by William Burt and Richard
Grossenheider has just been published .  The current issue of the
Wilson Bulletin carries as its lead article "Little Penguin", written
and illustrated by Dick Grossenheider while in the service in 
Australia.
Dec. 52 James F. Comfort was elected as new president of the Audubon
Society of Missouri at the annual meeting of the society at the
Lake of the Ozarks in October.  
Dec. 52 The John Dashners have another "junior naturalist" in the family.
This time it's a girl, born in October.

Is Our Land", a conservation epic.

State Park in Illinois.  Returning by way of Swan Lake.  If weather
permits, some may camp at the park the night before.
Dec. 52 The American Assn. for the Advancement of Science, and three
affiliated organizations will hold their conventions in St. Louis on
Dec. 27 through 30.  You do not have to be a member of any of 
the organizations to attend meetings.  Details of the American Nature
Society program given.
Dec. 52 WGNSS General Meeting, 8 PM, Friday, Dec. 12, at the Assembly
Room, Webster Groves Public Library.  The MDC movie "Bobwhite
Through the Year:" will be shown.
