Feb. 49 Krebs, H. L.  The Great Comet of 1948 - Report on sighting on cold morning from
Bellerive Park on Broadway at 4 AM.  More spectacular than
Halley's comet in 1910.

My. 49 O'Byrne, Stuart L. Ansel Bedell Astronomy Lectures - At the St. Louis Academy of
Sciences Museum, 4642 Lindell Blvd.  The lectures will be on
successive Wednesday evenings, the first on April 20, the last
on May 26.  The public is invited.

Jun. 49 Christ, Arthur Fragaria - The strawberry genus.
Jul. 49 Moore, George Persistent Seeds - How seeds at Rockwoods germinated after
lying buried in the ground for many years and brought to the
surface by plowing.
Jul. 49 Report on Botany meeting held on June 5 at Rockwoods.  About
20 members attended the Sunday afternoon meeting.
Aug. 49 Moore, George Two interesting Plants:  Hemlock-chervil and an unidentified
queer "Razzberry" found near Camp Wyman.  Finally identified as 
wineberry, purchased from a catalog.
Aug. 49 Botany Group's Picnic Breakfast - On Sunday, July 10, at 
Rockwoods - Report on; 17 attended.
Sep.49 A "Time Lapse" botanical motion picture with sound will be shown
at the Webvser Groves High School on the evening of Friday, 
Sep. 23, sponsored by the Webster Groves Garden Club.
Oct. 49 Botany Field Trip - Report on Sept. 11 field trip to Rockwoods
Reservation and Weber's Farm.
Nov. 49 Moore, G. E. Some New Ferns - At Rockwoods
Nov. 49 HOB Rare Flower seen on "Float" - The flower was Parnassia grandi-
flora, a member of the Saxifrage family, and is listed from only five
counties in southern Missouri.  The float was on the Current River.
Nov. 49 Flowers and Springs - Rockwoods was the scene of one of the 
Club's biggest days on Sunday, Oct. 23
Dec. 49 Moore, G. E. A Queer Tree - At Rockwoods.  Proved to be a Smoke-tree, 
something of a rarity.
Ded. 49 Botany Meeting - Report on meeting at Hill's house, with 30 in
attendance.   Discussion on food of American Indians lead by
Helen Hill, and  an examination of specimens brought to the 
meeting by attendees.  Concluded with a feast prepared entirely
from wild edible plants.

Mar. 49 Burns, L. J. A Week in Camp (Irondale) as Nature Director - Describes flora
and fauna observed, but bird data predominate.  Sixty species
identified, none rare.  Trees full of yellow-billed cuckoos.

Jul. 49 Bolinger, Alberta About 30 members of the Ornithology Group made the annual 
field trip to Hill's Hill.  The very hot weather and Art Christ's 
raspberry patch held field work to a new low.
Jul. 49 Comfort, James Earl Warbler Wave - No concentrated warbler wave was observed until
Sunday, May 15.  Then Comfort observed the wave in a grove of
locust trees in Webster Groves.   Eleven species observed.
Aug. 49 Korschgen, Leroy J. Analyses of Long-Eared Owl Pellets - These pellets, collected by 
J. Earl Comfort, were sent to the Missouri Conservation Dept. for
analysis.  A letter from the technician who analyzed the pellets
gives results of the analysis.

PEOPLE
Mar. 49 Walter H. Self, Jr., husband of Margaret Hill Self, was found dead
on Friday, Feb. 11.  Our sympathy to Margaret and her children.
May. 49 Pamella Sue Heinze - Daugher of Albert and Dorothy Heinze of
Kimmswick, born April 15, at St. Mary's Hospital
Jun. 49 Frances Pickel Honored - By The St. Louis Audubon as a leader
in interesting young people in nature study.  The award was a 
two week expense paid session at one of the Audubon Nature
Camps.
Jun. 49 J. Earl Comfort was also honored by St. Louis Audubon and
received the new bird classic, Birds Over America, by Roger
Tory Peterson;.
Sep. 49 Members Make the News - Miss Hattie Ettinger makes the news
almost weekly.  The St. Louis Star Times recently carried an article
on the Scwarz Brothers.  Ernestine Magner is pictured on p. 40
of the July 1949 issue of National Geographic.
Dec. 49 Mrs. Elsa Piper, last year's Vice President, won $300 in Post-
Dispatch photography contest.

  There's been much discussion about reviving or beginning other
groups.  Anyone having an idea is invited to make themselves heard
through Nature Notes
Aug. 49 New Groups - Likely that a Square Dancing Group may be formed.
A movement is afoot to revive the Photography Group.
Nov. 49 Editor Nature Notes is Your Publication - The  writer had hoped that the
end of vacation season would bring a deluge articles for Nature
Notes, but this has not happened.  We know many of our members
are capable of writing.  We can use reprints or press releases from
other organizations but would prefer articles from within.  Take a 
stand on a controversial issue; write a book review; philosophize.
Many of you likely would like to see additions to the Society's
activities; write us your thoughts.

recent visit to California.

Mr. Don Barbee, who is in charge of the Wildlife Refuge at
Weldon Springs will outline the work done by the Commission at
this refuge and how we as a group may assist them in census work.
Jun. 49 Cone, Ellen Report on the trip to McKillops valley in St. Genevieve County on
May 15.  About thirty-five attended.
Jul. 49 Report on the General Meeting at the Schwarz's on June 17.  Mr.
Schwarz displayed mounted bird specimens.
