bluebells.  There are none at Rockwoods and a few at Ranken
in the shade along creeks.

meeting on April 19.  Mr. Heinze also talked about his adventures
while collecting.

CONSERVATION
Jan. 46 A copy of the a report of the Conservation Federation, adopted at 
its Annual Convention in November, is enclosed.  The report
points out the folly of constructing high, super-expensive dams for
flood control.  They don't.

Dec. 46 O'Byrne, Harold I. Entomology Group - Group reactivated, the former group having
gone out of existence last winter.  Temporary officers are 
Harold O'Byrne, Chairman and Arthur Christ, Secretary.  A very 
active program is planned.  The Board gave official recognition to
the new group on Dec. 14.

Jan. 46 Audubon/St. Louis Bird Club Lecture - Friday, Feb. 1, at Soldan 
High.  Alexander Sprunt, the Southern representative of the
National Audubon Society, will speak on "From Coast to Crest".
Jan. 46  Christmas Bird Count Results.  Fifteen members and guests spent
seven hours afield on Dec. 23 at the Lodge making the count.  The
total was 28 species, 444 individuals.  On Dec. 24 Earl Comfort
went it alone on a non-stop  seven hour hike at Glendale/Webster
Groves, 24 species, 473 individuals.
Feb. 46 O'Byrne, Olive S. Yessir!  A Bird in Our Back Yard!  A review of Virginia S. Eiffert's
book, available from the Illinois State Museum, Springfield.
Feb. 46 Palm, W. A. An Owlish Experience - Experience with well-behaved screech
owl that came down a neighbor's chimney into the house.
Feb. 46 June Was Busting Out All Over - Birding on a warm January day
in St. Louis and St. Charles Counties.
Feb. 46 Mr. Alfred M. Bailey of Denver, Colorado will present "Land of the
Longhorns" at the St. Louis Bird Club meeting on Wednesday,
March 27, 8:15 PM, at Soldan High School.  The talk will be
about travels through Texas, from coastal islands to the plains and 
Rio Grande Valley.
Feb. 46 A News Release from the Conservation Commission - A recent field
survey found a surviving pheasant population in nearly all counties
north of the Missouri River although restocking was discontinued as
a failure ten years ago.  There's little reliable evidence that pheasant
compete with quail.
Mar. 46 Bedell, Beulah A Day Outside - Birding in Calhoun County
Mar. 46 Comfort, James Earl Eagles - The sighting of a bald eagle in St. Charles County.
Mar. 46 Comfort, James Earl Bird Lists for 1945 - 231 species seen.  Includes unusually good
list of 33 warblers.  Richard Reichele, Jr. led the field with 199; Earl
Comfort was second with 190.

will hold its first state-wide convention since 1942.  Details not

prairie horned larks.

Jun. 46 Comfort, James Earl Annual Audubon Meeting - The spring meeting of the Audubon
Society of Missouri was held at the Kingsway Hotel in St. Louis on
Saturday, May 4.  The next day the Audubon group assisted the
St. Louis Bid Club in its annual spring bird census.  184 species
were seen by the observers.
Jun. 46 Comfort, James Earl More on the Untimely Season - Birds - Apparent effects of the
unusually warm spring (as reported in the May, 1946 issue of 
Nature Notes).

Aug. 46 Espy Jay (S. P.  Jones) Fall Audubon Meeting - The Audubon Society of Missouri wll
hold its fall meeting in the Camden-Hahatonka area of the Lake
of  the Ozark, date to be announced.
Aug. 46 Comfort, James Earl July Wave of Shorebids - More than a thousand at Creve Coeur
Lake on July 27.
Sep. 46 Fall Meeting of the Audubon Society - Will be held during the last
week-end in September 28-29, at Arrowhead Lodge, Lake Ozark,
Missouri.
Sep. 46 Bird Notes - Submitted by Albert Berkowitz (from Des Moines, Iowa),
Earl Comfort, Jack Van Benthuysen, and a Creve Coeur Field Trip
group.
Nov. 46 Wild Geese Calling - An assortment of goose reports and 
information about idenification of the several species of geese likely
to be seen in this area.
Nov. 46 Bird Notes - A pair of avocets was seen in St. Louis County near
Taussig Road.
Nov. 46 WGNSS was represented at the Missouri Audubon Society Fall 
meeting by Mr. & Mrs. Harry Comfort, Ellen Cone, Beulah Bedell, 
Frances Pickel, Mrs. Susan Grumman, Dick Reichle, Jim Jackson,
and Jack Van Benthuysen.  Mr. Harry Comfort was elected to the
post of Regional Director; Mr. Jones, our Espy Jay, was elected to
an honorary membership.

Dec. 46 Cone, Ellen Who? Who? Towit!! - Account of Botany Group visit to Kimmswick
on Nov. 17, and observation of an owl.  It was a saw whet owl.
Marshall Magner held the bird for picture taking.
Dec. 46 The National Wide Christmas Bird Count - Area WGNSS is to
cover, the procedures to be followed, and admonitions to avoid
overlapping territories.  Will be held Friday, Dec., dawn to dusk, 
headquartered at the Lodge.
PEOPLE
Jan. 46 Death Takes Its Toll - Magdalen Pfeffer passed away on Dec. 21,
1945 after a serious illness.  She was a regular attendant at
meetings, a willing worker, and a field meet at the Lodge did not 
seem complete without her.
Jan. 46 Back from the Front - Major Arnoldl Zempel, expected to be home
by Christmas.
Feb. 46 The Passing of Mr. Lether.  John Lether, who has been quite active
in our Society, died in January.  He has attended a great many
meetings and field trips.
Sep. 46 Mr. Herbert H. Hill   died Aug. 22.  He is the faher of Ludlow Hill,.
Sep. 46 Miss Helen Schnaedelbach of Kirkwood died Aug. 23
Sep. 46 Our Editor, Clara Beerman, has accepted a position on the east 
coast and left for her new job on Aug. 22.
Sep. 46 Captain William Brandhorst and James Jackson are home from the
armed forces.
