Feb. 38 WGNSS has accepted the invitation of the Greater St. Louis
Garden and Flower Show to have a booth displaying its activiies.
Mr. Max Schwarz, 625 Tuxedo Blvd., Webster Groves, will
head up a committee to organize this display.
Mar. 38 Bradley, H. E. Wanted: Photographs of wild flowers that do well in gardens, for 
use in the Greater St. Louis Garden Show
Mar. 38 Pickens, M. K. Bit for Botanists:  There are signs of spring at Ranken.  
Jun.38 Schwarz, Max The Flower Show.  The show was a great success and adver-
tisement for WGNSS.  The composite rating by judges was 95
out of a possible 100.

Feb. 38 Bennitt, Dr. Rudolph Wasted Energy in Wildlife Conservation (excerpts from a speech
broadcast from Indianapolis)
Nov. 38 Notes from the Missouri Conservation Commission - Deer and wild
turkeys have been taken off the shooting list this year.  The
Commission is cooperating in wolf control measures by trapping.
The Bureau will prepare cases for violation of federal migratory
bird laws when violations are not prosecuted in state courts.

is engaged in two worthy projects.  The first is a census of the
nesting and migratory birds in Forest Park.  The second is a 
census of the European Tree Sparrow.

Jul. 38  O'Byrne, Harold Two Swamps - A visit to Reelfoot Lake, Tennesse and a swamp
in Indiana on private property near Dunes State Park.  A. F. 
Satterthwait was in the party visiting the Indiana swamp.  At
Reelfoot Lake many birds were seen (list included).  There was a 
heron rookery of approximately 13 acres in size at Reelfoot.

County, Iowa.  Describes the birds seen.  (Apparently a member

The twelve WGNSS members attending the Audubon Society
meeting in Cape Girardeau on Oct. 1 and 2, participated in this 
scheduled activity.  Eighty-four or eighty-five species of birds were
observed (list of most important ones given).
Nov. 38 Stones, Hattie Note on the Pileated Woodpeckers - On Oct. 22  I saw three 
pileated woodpeckers in the tall timber on the hill west of 
Gravois Creek and north of Hwy. 66, between Rock Hill and 
Sappington Roads.
Dec. 38 Lodewyks, Maude C. Jay Ways - Observed on a camping trip to the Lake of the Ozarks.

Dec. 38 O'Byrne,Stuart L. The October Bird Census.  More birds were counted than ever 
before, 1,216, including 324 Juncos, and 39 species.  To 
date we have accumulated almost 16,000 records of birds
(at Ranken), each with the habitat in which it was seen.
Dec. 38 O'Byrne, Stuart L. Instructions for Bird Census - Since it is a tradition for our society
to take part in the national bird census conducted by "Bird Lore", 
we'll have to abide by the rules for our monthly census and the
"Bird Lore" census, which differ slightly.  The differences are 
explained.  Two lists will have to be kept.

Feb. 38 Heising, Clara The WGNSS Executive Board wants to establish a Mr. & Mrs.
Alfred Satterthwait Summer Camp Fund to help WGNSS members
attend a summer nature study camp.  Conributions are invited.
May.38 Oscar Petersen, the Vagabond Dreamer, was added to the 
WGNSS list of Honorary Members at the May, 1938 annual meeting.  
Jun. 38 Phil Rau gave the Sigma Xi lecture at the University of Indiana.  His
subject was "The Evolution of Nesting Habits in Social and 
Solitary Wasps".
Jul. 38 A. C. Mr. Wendel F. Shay died suddenly on May 29.
Oct. 38 O'Byrne, Stuart L. Mr. Jones Honored - The Audubon Society of Missouri, after
having made Mr. Sterling P. Jones an Honorary Member in
recognition of his serving a year (1937) as its president, has 
succeeded in placing him on the Board of the National 
Association of Audubon Societies.
Nov. 38 Miss Irma Oefelein was elected chairman of the Astronomy group
to replace Arthur Christ, who resigned and is now attending the
University of Iowa.
Nov. 38 A Friend is Lost:  Miss Bessie O. Nau, long a prominent and 
member, died Oct. 18.
Dec. 38 Wedding Bells - The former Miss Adele Christ and Mr. R. Ludlow
Hill were married on Thanksgiving morning.

rejoining the American Nature Study Society as affiliates.

May. 38 O'Byrne, Stuart Making Nature Notes Interesting - Gives the objectives of 
Nature Notes, the several types of articles needed, and gives 
suggestions on how to make articles interesting.
May. 38 O'Byrne, Stuart Annual Meeting Report:  Important developments included
election of officers, and the new officers are listed above.  Other
developments included the adding of the name of Oscar Petersen
(the Vagabond Dreamer) to our list of Honorary Members.  It was
announced  that in response to the election, Prop. 2 carried
and wGNSS will not be a section of the A.N.S.S. but will become
an affiliated society.  The Office of Representative to the A.N.S.S.
   has been removed from the list of elected officers   Instead, the
President will appoint a representative to the Council of 
A.N.S.S. each year.
May. 38 No Deadline.  Articles for Nature Notes should be written and 
submitted as soon as the author has the inspiration.  Send in as
soon as written so that preparation of the next issue can begin.

broad in its coverage of nature as possible, it is essential that a

BANQUETS/SOCIAL EVENTS
Jul. 38 An Invitation for the Fourth of July - Mr. A. F. Satterthwait, in a
letter dated June 3, 1938, invited the Webster Groves Nature
Study Society to spend the Fourth of July holidays in Urbana.  The
Executive Board has accepted the invitation.  Visitors should 
bring cots, blankets, and their own food.
Oct. 38 Sunday, Oct. 9 - General Field Trip, afternoon and evening.  The
Lodge Unit will host WGNSS and other nature organizations at the
Lodge.  Hiking in the afternoon with a camp-fire program and a 
moonlight hike in the evening.
Oct.38 Sunday, Oct. 23 - General Field Trip all day at Hill's Preserve, 
Seckman, Missouri.  Phil Rau will be with us on this day to lead a
study of the many wasps which have inhabited a number of bird
houses in the area.

Dec. 38 Stones, Victor L. A Note of Thanks.  The Society wishes to thank its many friends
for their generous contributions and help in making the party at the
home of Miss Frances Pickel a most unqualified success.
Dec. 38 Stones, Victor L. The Wood-Cutting Bee - The Annual wood-cutting bee was 
favored with ideal conditions in both the weather and turnout.  Many
shed their coats/jackets.  A highlight was the delicious coffee
served by Mrs. Pickens.  Those who stayed after supper were 
treated to an interesting astronomical show by Mr. Obrecht, who
brought his telescope with him.
