BOTANY
Jun. 34 Rau, Martha Coming or Going?  A bloodroot flower of unusual form was
found at Ranken on April 9.  The single flower stalk bore three
flowers, one  large central flower and two others an inch below
on opposite-side branches.

Aug. 34 A Visitor from Texas:  Mr. John H. Robinson of Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Robinson, visiting Mr. Satterthwait, is anxious to obtain
specimens of the rhinoceros beetle (Dynastes tityrus), sometimes
seen in our area.
Sep. 34 DABAHA A Tool-using Insect:  a wasp that uses pellets of earth to conceal
the entrance to its nest.
Sep. 34 O'Byrne, Harold Interesting Butterfly and Moth Captures (in our region this year)
Oct. 34 Gallager, Jane The Life History of the Hellgrammite.  (Previously presented at

Oct. 34 ? A Moth That Looks Like a Wasp - Seen near the Lodge on Aug.
26.  It tuned out to be Conopia rileyana, a species new to the
author.
Oct. 34 O'Byrne, Harold A Calendar of Hair-Streak Butterflies.  Summarizes data from
observations of 394 butterflies over a period of 3 years.
Nov. 34 Two articles recently published by members.  One by 
Ralph Swain and a second by Harold O'Byrne ("Strymon ontario
in Missouri").  Strymon ontario is a rare butterfly, and two speci-
mens from Ranken are included in the Missouri list.

HERPETOLOGY
Jul. 34 Boyer, Dorothy A Let's Experiment!  Proposes to bring two spotted turtles to the
Lodge for observation to see if they can stand the climate here and
will reproduce themselves.  Asks for comment.
Jul. 34 Herpetology Group Formed.  Albert Heinze elected Chairman and
Miss Clara Beerman, Secretary
Aug. 34 Herpetology Group to subscribe to the journal Copeia, the quarterly
herpetological-ichythyological journal.
Sep. 34 Boyer, Dorothy A. Look Out!  Watch out for and report observations on five spotted
turtles that were liberated on July 21 at the pool below the spring
at the Lodge.
Dec. 34 The Heinzes Herpetological Visitors - Dr. & Mrs. Charles E. Burt of 
Southwestern College will spend part of the Christmas Holidays 
with us. Anyone wishing to communicate with them can send us
a card addressed to 1320 Milford Lane, St. Louis County.

Feb. 34 O'Byrne, Stuart L. Book Review:  Fishes:  Their Journeys and Migrations.
JUNIORS
Apr. 34  Junior Committee A Hike for Older Juniors:  An effort to meet the growing demand for
nature activities for older  Juniors.  It will be an all day hike at 
the Lodge, starting at 9 AM from Webster Groves.
May. 34 The New Junior Group  The April 21 hike for older Juniors was a 
great success, and it was enthusiastically voted to have a hike 
every month. The Junior Activity Committee:  Harold O'Byrne, 
Chairman, Mrs. Wm. Pickens, Miss Maude Lodewyks, and
Marshall Magner.
Sep. 34 Junior Activity Committee Juniors.  Reports on activities of th Juniors over the past several
months
Sep. 34 Junior Activity Committee William Brandhorst appointed as additional member of Committee.
He will assist in leading the Juniors on their hikes.
Oct. 34 Junior Activity Committee Juniors - A report on recent activities.  Included:  A snake with
a baby rabbit in its coils; donation of a scorpion to the Museum; 
an all-day outing for the over 12 group, followed by a steak fry
at the Pickens home.

No. 1 Group Buys Insect Box:  For the preservation of specimens 
brought to meeting.   (They raised the money for the box themelves.)

Jan. 34 Museum News - List of exhibits planned for this winter.  Drop by.
Feb. 34  O'Byrne, Stuart L. The Natural Arboretum - The marking of trees in the immediate
vicinity of the Lodge, as an adjunct of the museum, is progressing.
Up to Dec. 31, 34 species have been listed.  List in article.
Mar. 34 Museum News - The new Geology Group will undertake to
provide a Geology Exhibit for the museum.  The insect 
collection now contains named material in all the larger orders.
Since the Entomology Curator is a Lepidopterist, butterflies
now predominate, but this will be remedied.
Aug. 34  O'Byrne, Harold An Exhibit of Catocala Moths at the Museum
Sep. 34 Additions to Museum Library:;  An impressive list of scholarly
items.
Nov. 34 Additions to the Library (a lengthy list of historical and reference 
books), a gift of Phil Rau.  The gift doubled the size of our library.
A list of the more important items is included.
Dec. 34 Myers, Ruth What's Doing at the Museum:  A busy day cataloging and 
labeling items.  Participants:  Bill Brandhorst (first to arrive), 
Marshall Magner, Stuart O'Byrne, Sue Magner, Olive Schregardus,
Sterling P Jones, Dorothy Heinze, Maude Lodewyks, Harry 
Bradley (Librarian) with Mrs. Bradley and Doris.  "A momentous
date-Nov. 3- in the history of the Ranken Nature Museum."
Dec. 34 New Plans for the Museum - The success of the Nov. 3 workday
has encouraged the Museum Board to make this a regular
monthly event.   Plans are being made to give the Juniors a
definite part in the Museum program.
ORNITHOLOGY
Jan. 34 Ernst, L. H. Some Interesting Bird Observations:  At Canteen Creek near
Horseshoe Lake; streams of tree swallows over the Missouri River
and Creve Coeur Lake; egrets and ospreys; a very large flock of
European tree sparrows near Horseshow Lake
Feb. 34 Bird-ologist A Paper Feed Bag for Birds:  Take a bag of seed along when
motoring and sow on roads and fields for the birds.
Feb. 34 Espy Jay The Christmas Bird Count (in the Lodge Area) - ("The deepened
shadows of evening, the eager happy faces partly illuminated by
the dying embers of the fire-logs and a dim, smoky chimneyed
coal oil lamp, waiting for the final results to be hastily tabulated, 
was a sight not soon to be forgotten")
Feb. 34 Albino cardinal observed in Valley Park in July and August.
Members of the Audubon Society have just received "A Pocket 
Feb. 34 List of Missouri Birds".  It's available for 5 cents from the
Secretary of the Audubon Society, Rudolf Bennitt, Columbia, Mo.

May. 34 Fossils on a Bird Hike - A trilobite found by a birder on a gravel

Jun. 34 W.G.N.S.S. Joins Audubon Society - At the June Executive 
meeting permission was granted to the Ornithology Group to 
become affiliated with the Audubon Society of Missouri.  This 
step will enable our bird observers to co-operate more effectively
with other organizations and individuals interested in birds through-
out the state.
Jul. 34 Thomas Say Centenary Celebration,. New Harmony, Indiana.  A
rather long trip, but those who can make it will find it worth while.

Dec. 34 Christmas Bird Census by the Ornithology Group on Sunday,
Dec. 23.  Parties will leave the Lodge at 7:30 and 9 AM.  Bring
a portable lunch and an evening meal to eat by the fireside  
at the Lodge.  Spend the evening at the Lodge tabulating and
discussing the day's finds.  Someone will be at the Lodge all
day to keep the coffee pot bubbling and the fire going.

PEOPLE
Jan. 34 Satterthwait, A. F. Otto Widmann, Karlsruhe, Baden, Germany, June 15, 1841 - 
St. Louis, Mo., Nov. 26, 1933 - Very comprehensive, detailed
biography.  A professional  pharmacist and self-taught ornithologist,
he contributed, between 1880 and 1911, forty-six titles in eighteen
different periodicals and contributed to several widely used
ornithological guides and to the Bulletin of the St. Louis Bird Club.
The St. Louis Academy of Science published his "A Preliminary
Catalog of the Birds of Missouri" in 1907.

Nov. 34 Our Artist Recognized.  The Executive Board adopted a resolution
of appreciation for the anonymous artist that has been providing
the drawings that grace the heading of Nature Notes.  She is
Miss Ruth Meyers.
Dec. 34 Julian Steyermark off to Panama as a member of a Missouri
Botanical Garden expedition.  The expedition will collect 
specimens for the Garden's Herbarium.

in the American Nature Study Society's election).  From our 
Society Miss Nellie Matlock, Mr. Harold O'Byrne and Mr. A. F.

May. 34 Meyers, Ruth Description of the exhibits provided by the various WGNSS groups.
Nov. 34 The New Mexico Expedition:  Marshall Magner and Stuart O'Byrne,
with Mrs. Flaming Arrow as guide, are now traveling in New 
Mexico.  Some shipments of specimens for the Museum have
been received.  A full report is anticipated after the travelers return.

Mar. 34 New Constitution and By-Laws Proposed - To be voted on at the
annual meeting on April 6.  The document has 15 articles.  
Mar. 34 (Notice of) The Annual Meeting on April 6.  Officers will be 
elected, and the membership will vote on a revised constitution and
by-laws.  A Nominating Committee consisting of A. E. Mueller
(Chairman), A. F. Satterthwait and H. E. Bradley - Give them
your suggestions.
Mar. 34 Group Elections:  The election of Group officers for all groups 
should be held at March group meetings and the results sent
to the Editor in time to be published in Nature Notes.
Apr. 34 A.N.S.S. Journal - The first number of the promised publication
has been received.
Apr. 34 New Members (2)
May. 34 New Contitution Adopted.  The version printed in the March issue
of Nature Notes was adopted with certain amendments, chief of 
which gave to the first and second vice-presidents the duties of 
Membership and Publicity Chairman, respectively.  The new Junior
Activity Committee, replacing the former Junior Secretary, has 
been formed for the purpose of facilitating development of a larger
Junior department with a more comprehensive program of 
activities.  A new office, Curator of Properties, has been created.
The new Constitution and By-Laws will be printed and copies dis-
tributed to members. In the future, copies will be available to hand
out to prospective members.

BANQUETS/SOCIAL EVENTS
Jun. 34 General Field Trip.  The St. Louis Assn. for Childhood Education
has invited WGNSS to an all-day outing on Sat., June 2, at 
Camp Skull-Bones-in-the-wood near House Springs.  The St. 
Louis Nature Study Society and the St. Louis Bird Club will also
attend.  Birding will begin at 6 AM, and Mr. Dougan will bring
the evening to a close with star study.
Jun. 34 WGNSS General Meeting, Friday, June 22, at the home of Phil 
Rau, 549 East Argonne Drive, Kirkwood.  Preceding the meeting
there will be a basket lunch on the lawn, and a campfire back in the
woods for young people of all ages.  Later, Mr. Roscoe Nunn, of
the U. S. Weather Bureau, will discuss the weather.
Aug. 34 General Field Trip to Meramec State Park, Sunday, Aug. 5.
Program:  hikes before and after lunch and a visit to the park zoo
of Missouri animals. If you can, stay for supper and enjoy the
sunset.
Sep. 34 WGNSS General Meeting, 8 PM, at the home of Phil Rau, 549 E.
Argonne Dr., Kirkwood, Mo..  Mr. Roscoe Nunn of the U. S. 
Weather Bureau will speak on "The Weather".  If weather permits,
