Lab Overview
Rigaku D/MAX-A
Rigaku D-MAX/A Diffractometer
X-ray powder diffraction is performed on a Rigaku Geigerflex D-MAX/A Diffractometer using Cu-Ka radiation. The instrument is equipped with a vertical goniometer and a scintillation counter. Maximum power is 1.5kW operating at 50kV and 50mA; however, most work is on geologic materials using 35kV and 35mA. A variety of divergence, receiving, and scatter slits are available. In addition, the instrument has a fixed sample holder that accepts horizontal mounts with 3.8cm x 5cm dimensions.

Data is collected on the diffractometer using PC-based Datascan software by MDI and processed using Jade software. We have Jade Plus which has the following capabilities:

Scheduling and Fees

To schedule time for training on the instrument contact Paul Carpenter (paulc@levee.wustl.edu) or Dr. Jolliff (blj@levee.wustl.edu).

New users should be aware of the lab specific safety requirements and should have participated or taken the EHS lab safety training course offered online. In order to be trained on the instrument, users must sign that they have read and understand the lab specific safety sheet. Download a copy here . When you have read it, contact Paul Carpenter or Dr. Jolliff to make arrangements for a lab tour and to sign the blue book.

Dress Code in the lab:
Long pants and closed-toed shoes are a requirement in the lab (sandals are not acceptable). You may also want to bring a jacket or sweater with you, as it gets quite cold in the lab.

Instrument status:

The XRD is UP. If you have not used the instrument with the new x-ray tube, please see Paul Carpenter for information.

NEW POLICY

Until further notice all XRD users must use the instrument only when Paul Carpenter or Brad Jolliff is present in the lab annex. This means you may use the instrument during the time from 10am - 5pm or by arrangement with Paul or Brad. This is due to ongoing problems with our water chiller. Please remember this when scheduling time on the calendar.
