Question:
If we were to stop increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide today, why would sea levels continue to rise for
thousands of years?
Answer:
Ocean water circulates on the time scale of thousands of years. As ocean water is in contact with the
warm atmosphere, it begins to warm and expand, causing sea levels to rise. However, because ocean
circulation takes so long to bring water to the surface, the warming and expanding of the ocean will
continue for thousands of years.
